Social security in Thailand represents a crucial component of employee welfare, primarily evidenced through the establishment of compensation funds. These funds were initiated in 1972, marking a significant advancement in worker protection following the issuance of Announcement No. 103 by the Revolutionary Committee on March 16 of that year. Initially, the compensation fund catered solely to businesses with 20 or more employees located in Bangkok.

On July 1, 1988, the scope of coverage expanded to include all provinces across Thailand, reflecting a growing commitment to comprehensive employee protection. Subsequently, on September 3, 1990, the Social Security Office was created under the auspices of the Ministry of the Interior. This office assumed responsibility for social security and compensation fund management, inheriting these duties from both the Ministry of Public Welfare and the Ministry of Labor.

In 1990, a pivotal moment occurred when the draft for the Social Security Law received parliamentary approval and became effective on September 2. With the establishment of the Ministry of Labor in 1993, oversight of the Social Security Office became more structured and comprehensive. Today, this office is tasked with overseeing a broad range of social security initiatives, including provisions for work-related injuries, illnesses, disabilities, deaths due to occupational hazards, as well as benefits related to childbirth, child welfare, elderly care, and unemployment.
